"Homework should be a supplement not a requirement." So, how does an ideal teacher deal with students who don't complete?
When not completing hw, before “dealing” with students.. what is causing them not to do it?
I’m still new to this teaching business.. so I don’t know if this is “ideal”.. but I do know that some of my kids have parents working more than one job.. so there isn’t much support at home.. Even if their parents are home, most students deal with language barrier.. Some of these kids work as well.. so they’re too exhausted to do anything else after..
This is what my mentor and I do.. and it seems to be working..
- HW is meaningful.. students should be able to explain why that specific assignment is beneficial to their learning..
- HW is fun.. make it relatable to them.. use real word situations.. don’t always assign straight from the book..
- HW is review/practice.. students should be able to do them.. it shouldn’t be intimidating nor include material they haven’t seen..
- HW is due at the end of the week.. students are also given time at the end of class to work on it so that we can clarify anything..
We hardly assign homework.. because majority of the learning is in the classroom..
I hope this helps..
